The Ministry of Labor has proposed to raise the minimum wage for workers

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has proposed to increase, starting in 2023, the minimum monthly wage for workers. This is indicated in a document from the ministry reviewed by the Czech News Agency. The monthly minimum wage is expected to increase by 1,100 crowns to 17,300 Czech crowns gross, about 7 percent higher than in 2022.

The proposal was discussed among the social partners: unions would like an increase of at least 2,000 kronor a month, while employers had proposed 850-1,000 kronor. The increase would be decided by the government in a government decree. According to the proposal, only the lower and upper wage amounts would be adjusted. According to the Labor Code, the lowest guaranteed wage must not be less than the minimum wage and the highest must be at least twice the minimum wage.

Josef Středula, head of the Czech-Moravian Trade Union Confederation (ČMKOS), argues that the increase should amount to at least 2,000 kronor to cope with inflation. On the other hand, Labor Minister Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL) recently told ČTK that the minimum wage should be 41 percent of the average wage. According to calculations, the increase would be about 350 crowns.
